Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth
Along with many others I was eager to get my hands on the first Nine Inch Nails album released in last six years. Well, after the album has been out for some time now and I have diggested "With Teeth" a little, I feel that I need to share my observations and impressions.
Firstly, this album sounds nothing like "The Fragile" and that's a bad thing if you ask me. For those looking for aggressive Nine Inch Nails, you're out of luck, here we hear mellow, watered-down version of them. Granted, it's a matter of personal preference, so this is my opinion and my opinion only.
The opening track of "With Teeth" is disappointing. I was surprised to see "All The Love In The World" chosen as the first track of the album. It is slow and quiet, picks up by the end but still rather odd sounding. I'd put it towards the end of the album instead.
The following two songs("You Know What You Are?" and "The Collector") are great. They're your typical Nine Inch Nails. Very aggressive, you know that Reznor is out for some blood. I especially love the part of "You Know What You Are?" where Trent is screaming "Don't you ****ing know what you are?". Very, very high on adrenaline this part is to me.
I heard track number four and I was shocked. Firstly, "The Hand That Feeds" sounds nothing like NIN. Second reason is that it's truly amazing! It is very mainstream, I agree, but the choice of it being the single was perfect. Very different, very surprising and very well done!
"Love Is Not Enough" is carried by Reznor's lyrics as the industrial guitar sound and drum beat has definitely been done before. Nothing special here. Good, but nothing I did not expect. It loses its steam somewhere in the middle and slowly becomes a "meh". Some parts of it are very, very good however, mostly because of lyrics and drums.
"Every Day Is Exactly The Same" is the third single from the album. Again, excellent lyrics here and chorus is kick ass! Starts out really quiet, but then kicks in really well. Above average song by all means.
"With Teeth" is number seven and it's mellow. I still find myself listening to this song over and over again. I haven't got it all yet. Something is definitely there, I feel that Reznor is trying to pass us some message, but I'm not quite there yet. Hence no impressions really of this song. It's still a mystery to me.
Next comes the second single - "Only". I did not think much of this one at first. I heard a lot of good things about "Only", so I was very surprised. However, after listening to it a couple of times, I discovered that it's indeed old-school NIN and the feel that the versus are leading up to a kick ass chorus as the song slowly builds up the anticipation is quite special. Trent is teasing us by not unleashing it right away. Very well done, imho.
"Getting Smaller" is a very fast-paced industrial rock. Quite refreshing, but a drive-through. Something where you don't focus on lyrics much.
"Sunspots" is my fl0cking favorite song from "With Teeth" without a doubt. So much, so much is great about it that it's really difficult to know where to start. Again, a quiet and mellow song, with Reznor whispering words. You know it will pick up, and it does, but in a very different way. Music does get a little stale in the second part of "Sunspots", but lyrics are amazing, best of the album, so you barely notice anything.
"The Line Begins To Blur" is where "With Teeth" begins to blur a little. Not to my liking this song is. I feel that it's unnecessarily heavy, yet slow pace does not let you go wild while listening to it. Once it slows down towards the end I felt like pressing FF button.
"Beside You In Time" sounds very experimental, and, unfortunately, it isn't to my liking much.
Last song is "Right Where It Belongs" and it's the only reason of me turning off my stereo after track 10. Very solid track to close off the album.
Final verdict: 8/10.
Best songs: "Sunspots", "The Hand That Feeds", "Only".
